About Giclee Prints
When it comes to fine art reproduction technology, Giclee (pronounced "shee-clay") printing is singularly unique and has numerous advantages over other printmaking methods. Painters, museum curators, photographers and collectors value giclee prints as the preferred technology to achieve quality, clarity, trueness of color, tonal renditions and incredible detail. Whether applied on canvas or on the highest quality artist paper, fine art giclee uses microencapsulated pigments that have an archivability for the century to come. Any giclee should be treated as an original piece of artwork and should not be hung in direct sun light.
Giclee Prints on Paper
Preferred by artists since its inception in the 1990's, limited edition giclees on the finest quality artist paper offers collectors the colors and details as originally drawn by the artist. Every unframed print in titled, numbered and signed by Art Poulin and is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity.
All paper giclees will be delivered rolled and unframed. Art Poulin Studios has adopted this preferred practice of shipping for these reasons:
- 'Rolled giclee' shipping, which uses crush-proof tubing, drastically reduces the chance of any damage to the artwork
- 'Tube' shipping significantly reduces the shipping costs charged to our clients (if mailed flat, fees can be as high as $200.00)
Giclee Prints on Canvas
Closely resembling the original in form and appearance, a giclee reproduction on canvas offers an affordable alternative to appreciate the colors and nuances as painted by the artist. These images are truly remarkable and are valued by collectors worldwide. Each giclee canvas is out of a very small, limited edition and is distinctly separate and independent from any paper edition of the same original painting. Every canvas is personally numbered and signed by Art Poulin and is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity.
All giclee canvases will be delivered unstretched and unmounted. Art Poulin Studios has adopted this preferred practice for these reasons:
- 'Rolled canvas' shipping, which is mailed in a heavy tubing, drastically reduces the chance of any damage to the artwork
- 'Rolled canvas' shipping significantly reduces the shipping costs charged to our clients (if mailed flat, fees can be as high as $200.00)
- The surge in demand for Art Poulin's artwork has restricted our ability to offer anything outside the immediate portfolio of paintings and series offered on this website
Artist's Proofs
Art Poulin offers artist's proof editions that are independent from and in addition to the regular stated editions' size numbers for both paper and canvas. Historically, artist's proofs were a special subset of the regular limited edition which were the first prints pulled from the plate. These prints were generally the sharpest and most colorful, and frequently represented part of the artist's compensation for their art. A.P.'s are treasured as they are still perceived to be taken from the artist's private collection. They also maintain their collectability because they are a smaller subset of the generally released edition and they usually come directly from the artist (and not the publishers, in many cases). Artist Proofs have the artist's "AP" identifier, but in every other way, they offer the same print quality, color and paper or canvas quality as the regular edition. Each A.P. is designated as such and is personally numbered and signed (and in the case of paper prints, titled) by Art Poulin.
Edition Size
Art Poulin believes in releasing relatively small editions of his painting, thereby preserving the value of each for collectors. The edition size (as designated on the painting description on the Gallery page) appears on the paper or canvas reproduction after the print number (eg 14/400) and is similarly designated on the Certificate of Authenticity that accompanies the purchased artwork. Edition sizes for a specific edition will never change once a limited edition print in that edition is sold.
Image Size
Following standard studio practices, the image size of all giclee reproductions is approximately 5% smaller than that of the original size as stated on this web site. This ensures the integrity and preserves the identity of the original while offering others an opportunity to enjoy amazing likenesses on either canvas or paper.
